Eclipses 2027

Hand-drawn lilac full moon with a shooting star and a row of moon phases

In plain English An eclipse is a new moon or full moon where the Sun, Earth and Moon line up exactly. This page lists all five in 2027, with exact times.

There are five eclipses in 2027: an annular solar eclipse on Feb 6, a total solar eclipse on Aug 2, and three penumbral lunar eclipses on Feb 20, Jul 18, and Aug 17. The table gives the maximum of each in US Central and UTC.

All five eclipses

In plain Englishan eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth and Moon line up in a straight line. A solar eclipse is the Moon in front of the Sun, and a lunar eclipse is the Moon in Earth’s shadow.

Eclipses in 2027: type, time and sign
EclipseCentral (maximum)UTC (maximum)Sign
Annular solarSat, Feb 6, 10:00 AM CSTFeb 6, 16:00 UTC17°37′ Aquarius
The Moon is a little too far away to cover the Sun, so a ring of sunlight stays visible around the edge. Never look at it without certified eclipse glasses. Greatest eclipse at 31.3° S, 48.5° W, over the South Atlantic off the coast of southern Brazil. At that point the Moon covers about 86 percent of the Sun’s area. It comes 14 days before the Feb 20 penumbral lunar eclipse, part of the same eclipse season. Astrologers read a solar eclipse as a louder new moon: a reset point in the area of life the sign rules.
Penumbral lunarSat, Feb 20, 5:13 PM CSTFeb 20, 23:13 UTC1°58′ Virgo
The Moon passes only through the faint outer shadow of Earth, so it dims slightly. Many people cannot tell by eye, and it is easiest to see in a photo. It happens at the Snow Moon full moon, with the Moon in Virgo and the Sun in Pisces. Mercury is retrograde at the time. It comes 14 days after the Feb 6 annular solar eclipse, part of the same eclipse season. Astrologers read a lunar eclipse as a louder full moon, a point where something comes into view.
Penumbral lunarSun, Jul 18, 11:03 AM CDTJul 18, 16:03 UTC25°57′ Capricorn
Like the other penumbral eclipses, it dims the Moon only slightly. It happens at the Buck Moon full moon, with the Moon in Capricorn and the Sun in Cancer. It comes 15 days before the Aug 2 total solar eclipse, part of the same eclipse season. Astrologers read a lunar eclipse as a louder full moon, a point where something comes into view.
Total solarMon, Aug 2, 5:07 AM CDTAug 2, 10:07 UTC9°55′ Leo
The Moon covers the Sun completely along a narrow path, and the sky goes dark in the middle of the day. Outside the path it is a partial eclipse. Use certified eclipse glasses for every phase except full totality. Greatest eclipse at 25.5° N, 33.2° E, in southern Egypt near Luxor. At that point the Moon covers about 100 percent of the Sun’s area. It comes 15 days after the Jul 18 penumbral lunar eclipse, part of the same eclipse season. Astrologers read a solar eclipse as a louder new moon: a reset point in the area of life the sign rules.
Penumbral lunarTue, Aug 17, 2:14 AM CDTAug 17, 07:14 UTC24°04′ Aquarius
Like the other penumbral eclipses, it dims the Moon only slightly. It happens at the Sturgeon Moon full moon, with the Moon in Aquarius and the Sun in Leo. It comes 15 days after the Aug 2 total solar eclipse, part of the same eclipse season. Astrologers read a lunar eclipse as a louder full moon, a point where something comes into view.

Times are the moment of maximum eclipse, rounded to the minute, in US Central time and UTC. For the two solar eclipses the table also gives the point on Earth where the eclipse is greatest, and how much of the Sun’s area the Moon covers there.

The two solar eclipses

In plain Englisha solar eclipse only happens at a new moon, and only people along a narrow track see the Sun covered fully.

The Feb 6 eclipse is annular, meaning the Moon is slightly too small in the sky to cover the Sun, so a bright ring remains. The Aug 2 eclipse is total, and its point of greatest eclipse is in southern Egypt. Outside the central path, observers see a partial eclipse, and the size of the partial depends on how far you are from the path. Look up the path for your location with an eclipse map before you plan a trip, and use certified eclipse glasses for every phase of a partial or annular eclipse.

The three lunar eclipses

In plain Englisha lunar eclipse only happens at a full moon, and these three are the mildest kind.

All three lunar eclipses in 2027 are penumbral: the Moon passes through the faint outer part of Earth’s shadow. The Moon does not turn red, and in a normal photo it looks like an ordinary full moon that is a little darker on one side. Each one falls on the same date as a full moon on the full moons page.

How astrologers read them

In plain Englishastrologers treat an eclipse as a louder new moon or full moon, a date to notice rather than predict.

The solar eclipses fall in Aquarius and Leo, near the lunar nodes (the two points where eclipses can happen), which sit on that axis through 2027. Astrologers treat the sign and house of an eclipse as the area of life where something resets or comes into view. There is no scientific evidence that eclipses change events on Earth. The most useful thing to do with an eclipse date is to notice what you want to change.

The new moons that carry the solar eclipses are on the 2027 new moons page. To see which house an eclipse lands in for you, use the birth chart calculator. For the sky right now, see today’s sky.

Questions people ask

When is the total solar eclipse in 2027?
Aug 2, 2027. The eclipse peaks at 5:07 AM CDT (10:07 UTC) in Leo, with the point of greatest eclipse at 25.5° N, 33.2° E, in southern Egypt.
How many eclipses are there in 2027?
Five: two solar (one annular, one total) and three lunar, all penumbral. Every year has at least four eclipses and at most seven.
Can I see the lunar eclipses in 2027?
They are penumbral, the faintest type: the Moon dims slightly but never turns red. Most people cannot tell by eye, and you need to be on the night side of Earth at the time.
