Human Design authority
Emotional Authority in Human Design: How to Decide
Emotional authority is the Human Design decision method for anyone with a defined solar plexus. Human Design says the clear answer arrives after your mood has run its full swing, not in the first rush of yes or no.
What emotional authority is
In plain EnglishYou decide best after your mood has had time to go up and come back down.
Emotional authority belongs to anyone whose solar plexus is defined on the chart. In the Human Design hierarchy it outranks every other authority, so it takes the lead even when the sacral or spleen is also defined. Human Design is a modern system and not science, so treat this as a framework for noticing patterns.
The system says the solar plexus runs on a slow wave, not a steady line. You feel hopeful, then flat, then sure, then doubtful, and none of those moments is the whole truth.
How it feels on a Tuesday
In plain EnglishThe first answer you give is often the one you regret by Thursday.
A coworker asks you to take over a project. In the moment you feel flattered and say yes. By evening the same project feels heavy, and by the next morning you are not sure what you feel.
People with this authority often describe that swing. A job offer looks perfect on Monday and risky on Wednesday. The idea is that neither feeling is wrong, they are two readings of the same choice.
The gift and the trap
In plain EnglishThe gift is a decision you can live with, and the trap is rushing it or never ending it.
The gift is depth. By the time you answer, you have felt the choice from several sides, so the answer usually holds up. People around you may come to trust your slower yes.
The trap shows up in two ways. One is deciding at an emotional peak because the pressure to answer feels unbearable. The other is waiting so long for perfect calm that nothing gets decided. Human Design teachers disagree on how much clarity you should wait for. Many say that you do not need the wave to go flat, only for your answer to stop changing.
A practical way to use it
In plain EnglishSay you need time, then check the same choice on different days.
Try a simple routine for any decision that matters.
- Say “Let me sleep on it” and mean it.
- Write the choice and your gut reaction on day one.
- Check again on a clearly better day and a clearly worse day.
- Choose the answer that stayed the same, or the one you can accept in both moods.
Start with small decisions, like what to order or whether to go to a party, so the habit exists before a big one arrives. Our Human Design chart tool shows whether your solar plexus is defined.
Which types can have it
In plain EnglishFour of the five types can have it, and the type changes how it plays out.
Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators and Projectors can all have a defined solar plexus. A Generator still waits to respond, but then lets the answer ripen. A Projector still waits for an invitation, then gives the mood time before accepting. Reflectors have no defined centers, so they use a lunar approach instead.
If you do not have it
In plain EnglishIf your solar plexus is open, you borrow other people’s moods more than you realize.
Without emotional authority you decide by another route, such as sacral response or splenic instinct. The system says an open solar plexus soaks up the feelings in the room, so a tense meeting can feel like your own tension. The test is to ask whether the feeling stays when you are alone.
Questions people ask
- What is emotional authority in Human Design?
- It is the inner decision method for people whose solar plexus is defined. Human Design says your feelings move in waves, so a decision made at the top or bottom of a wave is only a partial view.
- Does emotional authority mean I am an emotional person?
- Not necessarily. Plenty of people with it look calm from outside. The idea concerns timing of decisions, not how much feeling you show.
- What if I have to decide today?
- Teachers suggest buying time where you can, such as asking to reply tomorrow. If a deadline is firm, notice your current mood and say so, then choose the option you would still defend on a different day.
